How your Intranet can Increase Employee Engagement amongst Millenials

Employee engagement has been an area of concern for many organizations in the past two decades. According to a Gallup poll, the number of disengaged employees has not changed much in the last 15 years, decreasing from 72% to 70%.

According to the Harvard Business Review, 71% of executives believe that employee engagement is an extremely important factor pertaining to business growth. Many successful executives understand that their employees are their most important assets and when they are engaged it can do wonders for the company.

Due to these staggering figures, many companies have invested in employee recognition platforms. These solutions can be expensive, but using your intranet portal to accomplish this can be a much more cost-effective alternative.

An Intranet solution is valuable because it gives members of the organization a central point of communication. This portal can be used to provide individual recognition to employees and this is very important because it can have enormous benefits for an organization. Here are four ways to use the Intranet to increase employee engagement.

1.    Centralize recognition

Make sure people realize how important they are to the success of your organization. Your employee portal should have an immediately visible area on the homepage that recognizes your highest performers. In order for recognition to be effective, it has to be on a frequent basis.

2.    Point out individuals

Nobody wants to feel as if their efforts aren’t noticed at work and using the Intranet to recognize individuals is a great way to increase engagement. Spend some time to highlight a key achievement by a team member and showcase it on the portal.

3.    Increase transparency – show them the numbers

This may seem like a radical strategy but it actually works. Updating how the company is doing financially can increase how vested employees are in the company’s success.

4.    Evaluate

This is perhaps the most important thing you need to do because it lets you know if the portal is being used. Tracking the total visits per week, time spent on the portal, devices used by employees to connect to the Intranet, and the percentage of employees using the portal. The results from tracking these factors can let you know if you need to make any improvements to the interface or content.

Making the changes listed above may require some time, but successful implementation will create a positive change in the culture of your company.

An Intranet doesn’t have to be a large and expensive solution. It can be done relatively quickly and at an affordable price. Having a place that employee’s can communicate, and stay connected to the pulse of the organization increases engagement. Employee engagement for your achievements will only become increasingly important for business going forward because of the number of Millennials in the workforce. By the year 2020, Millennials will make up more than half of the workforce and they have different expectations of their employers than past generations. This new generation places a greater emphasis on acquiring a valuable experience at the workplace rather than material things. It is a particular concern for Millennials and it is a legitimate concern.
